HOW TO LEARN ANY PROGRAMMING LANGUAGE?

By March 29, 2020 No Comments

Being in the IT field for more than 12 years now (in March’20), I have learned a few important things. That there is no end to learning. You always have to learn some new language or trending technology. Every five years or less there is a radical change happening. So the question is how do we stay up to date. Well here are my two cents on this question. To learn a new language follow these steps.

  1. SELECTING THE RIGHT LANGUAGE TO LEARN
Most of the time, we just try to learn a language that everyone is trying to learn. Or we just want to catch the trend. That could be the right thing to do but not always. Maybe you are trying to learn a language that does not match your tech skill set. I personally believe any knowledge does not go to waste. But why do we need to learn everything? We should instead adapt to focused learning, where you skip the parts you think are irrelevant in your career. Hence take efforts on selecting the right language to learn. Once you finalize take the next step.
  2. SELECTING A RIGHT RESOURCE
Spend some time in finalizing the right resource, take help from your teachers, seniors or friends. Ask then which resource has helped them. Add your additional research if you select specific content. Decide from where to consume that content, maybe a video or a book works for you the best, get that.
  3. CREATE A PLAN
A achievable and deliverable plan for you will keep you on the path. Set a decent timeline, decide on what time you will spend time on learning. The plan will help you priorities time on a daily basis and you won’t have to find empty time slots to spend on learning.
  4. STICK TO THE PLAN
Try to stick to the plan as much as possible. There would be cheat days, there would be sometimes impossible to compete every day, that’s okay. We are not here for a military training, take it easy. When you miss being sure to continue with the plan on the next day. Having a plan may fail, be ready to improvise and continue.
  5. DONT GIVE UP
Cliché, but seriously keep working on the plan, do not lose the focus. Keep working on your plan one step at a time. When you don’t feel like learning today. Just fool your mind by saying, should we just complete 1 page instead of 10 pages. Trust when you start you will end up completing 3-5 pages maybe 10 as planned. Just continue.
  6. REST FOR A WHILE
Sometimes motivation does not work at all. You don’t feel like learning today. If it’s absolutely not going to happen, promise yourself for tomorrow and stick to it. Of course, you deserve a break, you have been working hard on learning the new language. Take a break. The best case would be if this break was part of your plan. That would mean you planned really very well.
  7. MAINTAIN THE MOMENTUM
Once you are on the path on learning the new language, ensure that you do not lose momentum, as starting after a big interruption of days could be really challenging. As you deviate from the plan, it’s obvious that something else has taken a priority. Just check if that can be avoided so that you don’t lose the momentum.
  8. CELEBRATE
Once you complete learning the language, hurray! you have completed the goal and your plan worked. So celebrate! A sense of achievement will help you fo more. Don’t miss this moment!
  9. CONTINUE EXPLORATION
Once you complete the content that you selected for learning the language. Do not stop, continue checking other contents related to the language and that will help you get more knowledge around the topic.
